Mats Gustafson, SE

Mats Gustafson’s artistry seamlessly intertwines the worlds of fashion and nature, revealing a profound duality in his creative expression.

His work is characterized by fluid fields of colour, dramatic reduction, transparency, and masterful calligraphic lines, elements that have defined his career for over four decades. Gustafson’s fashion illustrations are celebrated for their poetic minimalism and impact, capturing the essence of garments with a sensitivity that transcends typical fashion depiction.

Since 2012, Gustafson has held the prestigious assignment of illustrating and documenting Dior’s Prêt-à-Porter and Haute Couture collections – a continuation of the house’s longstanding tradition of collaboration with leading fashion illustrators, beginning with Christian Dior himself. His illustrations have also graced the pages of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and been used in campaigns for luxury brands such as Hermès, Tiffany& Co., Yohji Yamamoto, and Comme des Garçons.

In stark contrast to his fashion work, Gustafson’s nature paintings provide viewers with a more introspective and serene sensation. These works, produced since the mid-1990s until present day, explore themes of melancholy and the fragile beauty of the natural world. His nature motifs, often rendered in watercolours and soft pastels, depict scenes of animals, trees, and landscapes with a meditative quality. The elegant and subtly expressive character of these works demonstrates his ability to capture the essence of nature with the same precision and sensitivity that marks his fashion illustrations. Most recently, his work has been acquired for the British Museum’s permanent collection and is featured in the exhibition Nordic Noir, as well as in the group exhibition The Romantic Eye at Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.

Born in 1951, Mats Gustafson began his career as a fashion illustrator in the late 1970s. He studied at the Dramatiska Institutet (University College of Film, Radio, Television and Theatre) in Stockholm and initially applied his graphic sensibility to stage design. His breakthrough in the fashion industry came in the 1980s, and since then, he has established himself as a leading figure in both fashion illustration and fine art.Gustafson’s works have been exhibited internationally, solidifying his reputation as a master of his craft and a unique voice in contemporary art.
