This year's presentation

For five decades, Mats Gustafson has refined watercolour and dry pastel into a singular artistic practice defined by an exceptional sensitivity to form. For Market Art Fair 2026, CFHILL presents Essentials, bringing together two bodies of work by the artist.

Since the mid-1990s, Gustafson has depicted the natural world. Swans, spruces, stones, and open landscapes are distilled to their essence through expressive contour and striking contrast—compositions that find stillness and clarity in complex forms. These works have earned significant institutional recognition, with exhibitions at Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the British Museum in London, which has acquired his work for its permanent collection.

As a counterpoint, the presentation concludes with a curated selection of Gustafson’s iconic fashion watercolours. Through a longstanding collaboration with Dior, he has rendered their collections with an elegance and sensitivity that extend well beyond the conventions of fashion illustration. He has depicted couture for houses including Hermès, Dolce & Gabbana, Schiaparelli, and Swedish Totême, with appearances in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, establishing him as one of the defining voices in fashion illustration since the late 1970s.
