Niklas Delin: Exploring the Interplay of Light, Shadow, and Memory Through Painting

At Market Art Fair, he presents a suite of paintings that merge historical influences with a personal search for light, where layers of darkness give way to subtle, emerging forms.

Niklas Delin’s delicate works, often initiated on dark foundations, reveal lighter shades that emerge through cracks and layers, transforming into shapes and forms recognisable to the human eye. In the suite of paintings he will present with Saskia Neuman Gallery at Market Art Fair in May, Delin explores the interplay between light and darkness in both interior and exterior environments. His work is deeply influenced by art historical references, blending traditional painterly techniques with his own exploration of light.

Starting almost entirely with dark tones, Delin allows lighter shades of colour to gradually seep through the surface. This technique creates subtle, evocative paintings that feel alive with motion. The darkness shifts and transforms as it moves toward light, shaping forms that slowly become discernible. The image emerges through these cracks—often carrying a story full of impressions. At times melancholic and heavy, his work always introduces glimpses of light, hope, and beauty, seeping through each brushstroke.

Delin’s process is deeply introspective. Each painting reflects his personal gaze, where objects, people, and environments from his own life take on new forms through the act of painting. His work is a continuous search for the essence of light, with the subconscious playing an active role in shaping the final image. Through time and technique, Delin constructs a constellation of images that evolve, offering a glimpse into both his personal experience and universal themes of light and dark.
