This year's presentation
For nearly five decades, Mats Gustafson has refined watercolour into a singular artistic practice defined by precision and an exceptional sensitivity to form. In ‘The Watercolours’ of Mats Gustafson, CFHILL presents the artist foremost as a master of the medium, through a focused selection of works depicting the Nordic landscape; trees, spruces, stones, and swans rendered with quiet intensity, balance, and restraint. Hovering between abstraction and figuration, Gustafson distils complex forms into essential compositions, demonstrating a deep understanding of watercolour as both material and method.
Recent exhibitions at the British Museum (Nordic Noir) and Nationalmuseum (The Romantic Eye), alongside the British Museum’s acquisition of his work, underscore the institutional recognition of his nature studies. As a counterpoint, the presentation concludes with a curated selection of Gustafson’s iconic fashion illustrations, reflecting the duality of his practice through the same precision and elegance found in his landscapes.
