Joel Slotte, FI

In the restless fantasies of Joel Slotte’s paintings, we see complex underdogs, bruised thinkers and weary revellers. Moving effortlessly from lush gardens and shabby bike sheds to witching hours or the edges of the universe, Slotte’s rich symbolic scenes are dense with meaning.

The medieval armors, plant folklore, squirming tattoos and jagged death metal logos serve as markers to the characters’ mindscapes. Slotte works with a variety of mediums, from painting and drawing to ceramics, glass and serigraphy.

Joel Slotte (b. 1987, FI) received the nationally notable Young Artist of the Year award in 2021. In addition to numerous private collections in Finland, Sweden and Denmark, Slotte’s works have been acquired by major public collections, including the art museums of Helsinki, Tampere, Turku and Kuopio, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions, most recently at Vantaa Art Museum Artsi, Kuopio Art Museum, HAM Helsinki Art Museum, Turku Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, and Finlandsinstitutets galleri in Stockholm.
