Lotta Antonsson

Lotta Antonsson belongs to a generation of Swedish artists who emerged in the 1990s, inspired by post-structuralist theory and art exploring new media as it pertains to identity formation. For nearly three decades, her work has questioned the objectification of women with irony and self-distance. Her exploration and exploitation of lens-based images disseminated via printed matter are at the heart of her practice. Antonsson uses her immense personal archive of vintage fashion, erotic, and lifestyle magazines and record covers to examine the historical and photographic representation of women from a feminist perspective.

Antonsson uses primarily material from the 1960s and 1970s. Patrik Andersson identified this tendency in the publication ‘I am a Woman’ (2016) as a kind of eulogy to the social, sexual and political moment that surrounded her childhood. (...) By cutting and pasting documents from the past, Antonsson suspends us in a space that is both personal and political – enough to suggest that all is not lost in our age of digital reproduction and political cynicism.’
