Gerda Maas, NL

Gerda Maas is fascinated by the universe, structures from nature and the beauty of science.

During her searches, she often encounters whirlwinds. Such as gas clouds and supernovae, glittering droplets on a spider’s web and whirls of elm seed. The beauty of science, the functioning of the human brain, tissues and structures such as connective tissue and DNA are its starting points. These objects are like thin mists that bring stillness to a space, accentuate and refine it.

She has shifted her visual medium from clay to polymer. Polymer is a plastic. By means of heating, Maas has developed her own, unique technique so that she can “model” with it. For the dyeing she uses pigments and/or merino wool. The skin of the polymer can be gilded with pure metal leaf (gold 23.75 carats, silver 925, pure palladium). When all parts are ready, she starts assembling.
