Fredrik Wretman, SE

Fredrik Wretman, born in 1953 in Stockholm, has been a distinctive and influential artist since the early 1980s, working with installations, sculpture, and moving images

He early made a strong impression with his stunning water installations, in which floors dissolve into mirrored surfaces. His fascination with space, architecture, scale, and context is a recurring theme in all aspects of his work.

In 1991, he made the much-acclaimed exhibition “American Floors (Russian Slippers)” at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, where all these aspects were introduced to a large audience. In a series of large-scale, high-profile installations at Färgfabriken in Stockholm, “Goatrans (Pacific)”, 1997, and “Looking For Alice Fine”, 2006, he focused on the sculpture “Goatrans”, a Buddha figure in orange foam rubber, which had a major impact far beyond the art world.

In the 2010s, his work took a new turn when he began working with sculptures in wax and bronze in various scales. Fredrik Wretman has also created a long series of public works, such as BODHI (Borås, 2004), Hermes (Kristianstad, 2014), and Reflektion (Vädersholm, 2024), to name a few.

Fredrik Wretman, born in 1953, lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden, and Chiang Mai, Thailand. He has exhibited nationally and internationally since he graduated from the Royal Institute of Arts in Stockholm in 1985. His works are represented in museums, art galleries, and public places around Sweden and internationally.

Recent exhibitions include “Dark Manners” together with Dan Wolgers, Galleri Hedenius (2025), “Asterism”, Galleri Flach, 2024, “Monogram” at Kummelholmen (2016), “flames, caves, portals and flowers” STP 35 B, Stockholm (2018), “IC3D” Vandalorum (2019), “Happen”; Galleri Hammarén, Gothenburg (2021), “Stolen Goods (Prometheus)” together with Helga Wretman, Olseröds Konsthall (2021), and “Spirit no. 9 – We don’t need Another Hero, really (?)” Galleri Flach in collaboration with Gallery Hedenius, Stockholm (2022).
