Eline Mugaas, NO

Eline Mugaas (b. 1969 in Oslo) received her artistic education from The Cooper Union in New York. After nearly a decade in New York, having garnered various photographic and scenography commissions, Mugaas returned to Norway where the public was introduced to her work with the exhibition “Let me be your one way street” at Fotogalleriet in 1996.

In her photographs, Mugaas has focused on the urban landscape and interior spaces, and motifs with a still-life quality that borders on the painterly. There is a forthrightness and immediacy in the depictions, and the style of execution is sensual. In her more recent exhibitions she has integrated sculpture and installations together with her photographs. She has also worked with film, collage and objects, public commissions and curatorial projects.

She received praise for Hold stenhårdt fast på greia di, an exhibition of activist and feminist art she co-curated with Elise Storsveen for Kunsthall Oslo in 2013. With Storsveen, she has since 2008 published the fanzine ALBUM, and in 2016, Mugaas published the book Siri Aurdal by Eline Mugaas, which recontextualizes Aurdal’s artistry and led to reconstructions of her early works and several major exhibitions. Mugaas received the prestigious Lorck Schive Art Prize from the Trondheim Kunstmuseum in 2019. Recent solo exhibitions include “Løst inventar” at Kunstnerforbundet in Oslo and “Løst og fast” at Kinokino in Sandnes.
